THUNDER - Six Of One... (2007)
As the title suggests, Six Of One... is not a full studio album from British band Thunder but a six track EP featuring three studio and three live tracks. The EP has been released as both a stop gap between albums and to coincide with the band's forthcoming tour. The three new tracks are great stomping rockers made by gents now old enough to know better, but thank god they don`t! Frontman Danny Bowes' once long hair is now cropped and silver, but his voice is still powerful and strong as can be heard belting out on the live tracks which are taken from recent albums. Thunder are resurgent at the moment and with quality song writing and good ballsy playing it`s easy to see why old fans are flocking back to see them on tour
Thunder`s next album should be a real corker if this mini collection is anything to go by. Stand out tracks include "Yesterday`s News", "Chain Reaction" and the live version of "A Million Faces".
SR rating of 8 out of 10.

INNES SIBUN - Tail Dragger (2007)
Blues guitarist Innes Sibun is probably best known for his work with Robert Plant in the 1990s. That alone should tell you the calibre of Mr Sibun, this guy can play! Innes is influenced by BB King and there is also a nod towards Led Zeppelin on Tail Dragger. Fans of smouldering guitar solos should love this album. His vocals are a stark contrast to the slick guitar playing, a voice that is gravelly, rasping and gloriously ragged, a bit like Mark Lanegan with a sore throat.
If you are not familiar with his solo work then new album Tail Dragger is the place to start as it is his strongest release so far. Stand out tracks include "As The Years Go Passing By", "I`ll Never Love Again", "I Want You Back" and the Otis Rush cover "It Takes Time".
SR rating of 8 out of 10.

ALTER BRIDGE - Blackbird (2007)
Blackbird is the eagerly anticipated second release from American rockers Alter Bridge. When Alter Bridge formed in 2004 they were billed as Creed with a new vocalist, Myles Kennedy. Yet Alter Bridge are a real force in their own right and have a unity and chemistry that Creed were lacking laterly. They also have a real star in Kennedy who has made a big impact with his incredible voice and great live performances. Guitarist Mark Tremonti also shows real class with his driving riffs, shredding solos and beautiful acoustic work.
With Blackbird Alter Bridge`s music remains heavy, melodic and proves quite compelling listening. Stand out tracks include "Brand New Start", "Ties That Bind", "Rise Today" and "Watch Over You". Blackbird is another belter of an album from Alter Bridge!

MR D - Wings & Wheels (2007)
Wings & Wheels is the debut release by Glasgow`s Mr D. Mr D is a talented singer songwriter who judging by this fine album is a guy who is so laid back he must be horizontal. The music is super mellow country rock which is sedate yet enthralling, and draws comparisons to The Eagles and the subtleties of fellow Scots Travis. Mr D`s soft vocals and haunting steel guitars will have blood pressures lowering across the country.
Being a dad of three it`s great to be able to sit with my wife in the evening and relax with a bottle of wine, and Wings & Wheels is the perfect album to chill to. Stand out tracks include "Island Girl", "Late September" and "I`ll Keep Looking Around".
SR rating of 7.5 out of 10.

THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS - A Beautiful Lie (2007)
Why do some people become greedy? If you carve out a successful acting career why would you want to be a rock star? or vice versa, think Russell Crowe, Stephen Seagal, or god help us Jason Donovan. Yet sometimes it works out. Take Thirty Seconds To Mars singer Jared Leto, already a star in "Alexander", "Panic Room" and "Fight Club". He`s now showing off his excellent vocal talents.
The platinum selling "A Beautiful Lie" caught my attention after catching hit single "The Kill" on The Kerrang Channel, but this is not the only highlight here. Opening track "Attack" bursts through with energy and Leto`s vocals are strong and unique. "From Yesterday" is a song I`ve played to death and am still listening to.
Overall an excellent album. I`m just waiting for the tour! Unless he`s making a film!

JOE BONAMASSA - Sloe Gin (2007)
Sloe Gin is the sixth studio album from outrageously talented American bluesman Joe Bonamassa. An excellent guitarist, Joe combines technical brilliance and raw feeling in a blues/rock fusion which has him likened to the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. Incredibly Joe started playing guitar at the age of four and opened for B.B. King when he was just 12 years old.
Sloe Gin sees Joe balancing acoustic and rocking blues guitars with dramatic effect, and be prepared for some jaw dropping guitar solos. Not only a fine guitarist, Joe also delivers a great, gritty vocal performance throughout. The album features a mixture of covers of tracks by some of his favourite artists, and quality songs written by Joe. Stand out tracks include "One Of These Days" (by Ten Years After), "Dirt In My Pocket", "Seagull" (by Bad Company) and the mellow title track.
I highly recommend Sloe Gin and earlier Bonamassa releases such as You And Me (2006) and Blues Deluxe (2003).

DRIVEBLIND - Driveblind (2006)
Scottish rock band Driveblind formed in Aberdeen in 2001. They were signed by Geffen records and relocated to Los Angelis (USA). This self titled album is the band's impressive debut release and has such quality. I`m bewildered as to why they are virtually unknown. Still a healthy following in NE Scotland and a growing fanbase in the USA should change that in time. Driveblind deliver psychaedelic guitars with a 70s feel to a collection of diverse tracks, some anthemic rockers and others beautiful and delicate, all given a golden touch by vocalist Terry McDermott.
Outstanding tracks include "Raised At Midnight", "Leave Home (Save Yourself)", "I Know You" and "The Fool Rides Again".

SYMPHONY X - Paradise Lost (2007)
Five years since Symphony X`s last release and well worth the wait! Paradise Lost is the New Jersey progressive metal band's 7th studio album, and their strongest release so far. The concept of the album is based on the Poem "Paradise Lost" written by John Milton in 1667. Milton`s poem tells the biblical story of the fall from grace of Adam and Eve. Rather than make a religious statement, Symphony X concentrate on retelling the story with dramatic effect. Opening tracks concern Lucifer`s (Satan) rebellion and are challenging and fittingly hard hitting, though balance is restored later with the stunning, melodic, title track. While the whole band deliver a fine performance, Michael Romeo deserves real credit for his complex, neo-classical guitar work. Other stand out tracks include "The Walls Of Babylon", "The Sacrifice" and "Revelation".
SR rating of 8.5 out of 10.

CHRIS CORNELL - Carry On (2007)
Carry On is the second solo album release from American vocalist Chris Cornell. The former Soundgarden, Audioslave & Temple Of The Dog frontman has one of the finest voices in rock music, and his silky vocals shine throughout this album. Chris`s first solo album, 1999`s Euphoria Morning, was a phenomenal release, and while Carry On doesn`t quite reach its predecessors excellence it`s still very engaging and entertaining. As with Euphoria Morning, Carry On is less heavy than work with his previous bands, yet gives him the opportunity to experiment a little. The jaw dropping cover of Michael Jackson`s "Billie Jean" sounds great with its complete reworking Cornell style. Stand out tracks include "Safe and Sound", "Arms Around Your Love", "Scar On The Sky", and the Casino Royale Bond theme "You know My Name".
SR rating of 8.5 out of 10.

KINGS OF LEON - Because of the Times (2007)
Kings Of Leon return with a third impressive album of rich Southern rock titled Because Of The Times. The band continue to do their own thing and do it well - raw country rock fused with new-wave. Because Of The Times is a compelling album which just gets better every time I listen to it. Frontman Caleb Followill`s distinctive southern drawl is really something special. Kings Of Leon are the perfect antidote for those tired of charts clogged up with throw away pop. Outstanding tracks include "On Call", "Camaro", "Black Thumbnail" and "My Party".

FRANKIE MILLER - Long Way Home (2006)
Frankie Miller is without doubt one of the finest vocalists ever to have come out of Glasgow. His powerful Bluesy voice is nothing short of awe inspiring. This album features a collection of previously unreleased tracks recorded in the early 1990s before he suffered a brain haemorrhage in 1994. Always a fighter, Frankie made a gradual recovery and the featured track "Lies tells the best truth of all" was recorded in 1997. The album stars an impressive line up of musicians including Joe Walsh (The Eagles) on guitar, the late Nicky Hopkins (Jeff Beck Group) on keyboard, and the late Ian Wallace (Bob Dylan & King Crimson) on drums.
Other outstanding tracks include "Guilty Of The Crime", "Win Lose Of Draw" and "You're The Star". A highly recommended album from an often underrated artist.

BIFFY CLYRO - Puzzle (2007)
Puzzle is the fourth album released by Ayrshire alternative rockers Biffy Clyro, and what an album it is! From start to finnish Puzzle is jam packed with great tunes, hooks and choruses. The Scottish trio, fronted by Simon Neil really have outdone themselves here. Not that there was anything wrong with previous releases, but Puzzle sees the band becoming more accessable and melodic. In fact Biffy Clyro have suddenly shifted up several gears and have finally reached the major league. Outstanding tracks include "Semi-Mental", "Get F****d Stud", "Living Is A Problem Because Everything Dies" and "Folding Stars". Puzzle is the sound of Biffy Clyro coming of age! 'Mon the Biffy!.

MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE - The Black Parade (2006)
Every now and then an album comes along that you didn't really fancy, but once you hear it you can't stop playing it. "MCR" have served up a great album here and one I strongly recommend. Gerard Way has an excellent voice and carries the album along with moments of hard rock, drama and tenderness. Hit singles "Famous last words" and "I don't love you" are only two of the highlights here as each song demonstrates a growing maturity and professional attitude. The band seem to be progressing with each album.
" Welcome to the Black Parade", " Mama" and the excellent and punchy "Teenagers" are real highlights but to be honest there really isn't a bad song on here. " Disenchanted" is however a wee bit special and a song I just can't playing.
So, do yourself a favour, if you've got a spare tenner, buy this. You won't regret it.

RUSH - Snakes & Arrows (2007)
Snakes & Arrows is Rush`s 19th studio album and is the Canadian trio's strongest release for some time. Repeated listenings unlock a mature, well crafted album which is up to Rush`s usual high musical standards. Thankfully Geddy Lee has got his vocals spot on with Snakes & Arrows as his performance on Vapor Trails (2002) was far too high pitched for my liking. Neil Peart`s lyrics are deep and focus on his own personal journey on coming to terms with the loss of his wife and daughter. Outstanding tracks include "Far Cry", "The Larger Bowl’", "We Hold On", and the instrumental "Malignant Narcissism". While Snakes & Arrows is not a classic Rush album like Moving Pictures (1981) or 2112 (1976) it`s still a great release and a very worth while purchase which shows the prog rock legends can still hit the right note.

PORCUPINE TREE - Fear Of A Blank Planet (2007)
Porcupine Tree are one of the most productive and consistently excellent Progressive rock bands of recent years. Fear Of A Blank Planet is their 9th studio album and a worthy successor to 2005`s epic Deadwing. Frontman Steven Wilson`s musical vision continues to deliver rich rewards and his creativity shows no signs of drying up. Fear Of A Blank Planet consists of five tracks which centre around the concept of teenagers struggling with depression and drug abuse. Outstanding tracks include the title track, "My Ashes" and "Anesthetize" which is a whopping 17 minutes and 42 seconds long and contains a tasty guest guitar solo by Rush`s Alex Lifeson.
SR rating of 9 out of 10.

THE RESTLESS BREED - Hiding In Plain Sight (2003)

The Restless Breed originally formed in the early 1980s at the height of the NWOBHM (New Wave Of British Heavy Metal) under the name of Blaze. After a lengthy hiatus, the Aberdeen band have reformed and recorded Hiding In Plain Sight - their first ever release. Listening to this album really is like stepping back in time and sounds very reminissant of big metal bands of the early 80s like Iron Maiden, Saxon and Riot. There is no doubt that The Restless Breed can play, though probably to a level that will see them packing out your local pub rather than filling larger venues. I particularaly enjoyed frontman David MacLeod`s vocals as he pours real commitment and passion into his work. The style of music may sound slightly dated but the recording quality is good and the CD is also nicely packaged. Stand out tracks include "Cry Of The Wolfen", "Too Late", "Aces High" (not a cover of the famous Iron Maiden track, but does deal with similar subject matter) and "Mr Grey Regrets" (one of the few newer tracks on the album). Being bluntly honest you will either like or loath Hiding In Plain sight. For me it was the former and I enjoyed this delve into classic heavy metal.

JET - Shine On (2006)
Following up their acclaimed debut album Get Born (2003) was never going to be an easy task for Australian rockers Jet, but with Shine On they definitely manage it. The band from Melbourne let their musical influences come to the fore again on this new album, a proud mix of AC/DC, The Rolling Stones and Oasis, amongst others. It`s an album of timeless classic rock throughout and a personal triumph for the band after the death of the Cester brothers father in 2004 (Nic - vocals & guitar, Chris - drums & vocals).
Outstanding tracks include "Holiday", "Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is" and "Stand Up". Shine On sees Jet delivering that difficult second album with ease.

THE TREWS - Den Of Thieves (2006)
Currently being played to death on my CD player, Den Of Thieves really is a special album. With top ten singles and gold certified albums in their native Canada it`s criminal that The Trews are currently almost unknown in the UK. Den Of Thieves is the second album from this rock band from Nova Scotia, and is produced by the experienced Jack Douglas (Aerosmith, The New York Dolls and John Lennon).
The Trews are a musically talented band similar in style to Matchbox Twenty, Train and Live. Their excellent front man Colin MacDonald gives a strong vocal performance (with a hint of Eddie Vedder). Guitarist John-Angus MacDonald rips out some fine work, while bassist Jack Syperek grooves, and drummer Sean Dalton provides solid and precise drums.
Den Of Thieves contains 15 quality tracks, the highlights for me being "So She`s Leaving", "Anna & Mia", "Yearning" and "Makin Sunshine". Canada`s best kept secret delivers an album straight out of the top drawer, and not a pair of tartan trousers in sight!

BLACK STONE CHERRY - Black Stone Cherry (2007)
Black Stone Cherry is the self titled debut album from an earth shaking new band from Kentucky, USA. This is a Southern rock band with a real heavy edge, sounding like a mix of Lynyrd Skynyrd, Soundgarden and Black Sabbath. The retro feel continues with the inclusion of a kick ass cover of the Yardbirds "Shapes Of Things", and there is also a definate nod to Led Zeppelin (Fred John Young`s thundering drums are very John Bonham esq). The entire album has strong material and is a very competant and assured piece of work.
All fans of hard hitting rock 'n' roll with flying guitar solos should appreciate this album. Stand out tracks include"Hell And High Water", "Lonely Train", "Shooting Star" and "Rollin` On".
SR rating of 8.5 out of 10.

GILLAN - Future Shock (2007 reissue of 1981 release)
Originally released in 1981 Gillan`s Future Shock has been nigh on impossible to find on CD until now with this 2007 reissue. Gillan`s back catalogue has also been re released but for me Future Shock was always the band's finest moment, and a real gem of an album.
With ex Deep Purple frontman Ian Gillan in charge of proceedings it`s little wonder Gillan where often compared to Deep Purple mark 2 in sound and style. Ian Gillan really is one of rock`s great vocalists and his golden tonsils work wonders on Future Shock. The rest of the band are also in fine form with particular credit going to inspired Irishman Bernie Torme on guitar.
Outstanding tracks include "Night Ride Out Of Phoenix", "Bite The Bullet" and the title track. The reissue also includes 8 bonus tracks which boast the singles "Trouble" and "Mutually Assured Destruction".

THE VIEW - Hats Off To The Buskers (2007)
Hats Off To The Buskers is the debut album from the much hyped Scottish band The View. The Dundee based band have managed to deliver a magnificent album of brash, confident, and enthusiastic Indie rock. "The Buskers" lyrical content revolves around tales of the band's experiences growing up in Dundee which gives the album an open, honest feel. While echoes of other bands can be heard (Oasis, The Undertones, The Libertines?) The View do a style and originality of their own which by the end of 2007 should find them established as a major act .
Outstanding tracks include "Same Jeans", "Wasted Little DJ`s", and "Superstar Tradesman".
SR rating of 8 out of 10.
