PAUL GILBERT - Space Ship Live (2005)
Ex Mr Big and Racer X guitarist Paul Gilbert has been busy with a productive solo career for the past few years. This new DVD "Space Ship Live" has been released to acompany his new studio album "Sace Ship One". As the title suggests the DVD contains live performances from Paul featuring around 90% of material from the new album.
What makes this DVD slightly different is that it has been filmed in a recording studio with no audience. As you would expect, this set up loses a lot of the atmosphere which would have been created at a live venue, but what you do get is the feeling that you are getting a private performance in your own living room. Paul and his backing band play the whole show wearing bright orange space suits (minus helmets!), possibly to keep in with the space theme, or possibly just for the hell of it.
As usual there is plenty of excellent guitar work from Paul, and a sterling perfomances from Marco Minnemann on Drums, and Linus of Hollywoood on Bass. Also of note is Paul's strong vocal performance which is just as good live as on his albums. Each song is introduced by Paul complete with a bit of friendly banter and wailing guitar solos. Outstanding tracks include the title track "Space Ship One", and a Racer X cover "Scarified". The show ends with a solid cover of The Beatles "It`s All Too Much".
This is a refreshingly different music DVD and a real pleasure to watch for guitar fans.

MAROON 5 - Friday The 13th (Live DVD / CD, 2005)
Those of you not fortunate enough to see Maroon 5 on their last tour would do well to add this to your collection and file it under "gigs I should have went to". This concert footage was filmed on the last night of their hugely successful world tour promoting their debut album "Songs about Jane". The whole album is played here as well as new song "Wasted Years" which bodes well for their next album. The hits may be what the crowd want but the atmospheric "Secret" is always going to be one of my personal favourites. Adam Levine's vocals are excellent throughout and considering this is the last night of a grueling world tour shows, what a great talent he is.
Disc 1 of this package is the DVD of the whole concert plus behind the scenes documentary footage, and Disc 2 is the whole gig on CD format which seems to be the trend these days. So overall a good deal for a tennar from play.com.
The set finishes with a cover of Oasis "Hello" and then into the massive hit "She will be loved", again showing a great vocal performance by Levine. Do yourself a favour and buy a great night's entertainment and don't dare miss them next time round.

AC/DC - Family Jewels (2005)
Sometimes I forget what a great band AC/DC are, then something like this DVD comes along and reminds you how good rock boogie music should be played. A double disc package with DVD 1 belonging to the Bon Scott era and Disc 2 to Brian Johnson, this is an essential part of any good rock fans collection.
I grew up listening to DC, first seeing them in 1982 but I never got the chance to see the great Bon Scott. Now I understand why he was recently voted No.1 frontman in Classic Rock magazine. Scott comes across as a cheeky wideman, always playing up to the camera and loving the attention. Twenty videos from as early as 1975's "Baby please don't go" to1980's "Highway to Hell", all the great Scott song are here. You also appreciate the talent of Angus Young, a great guitar player and born to entertain. The only down point was that the aforementioned "Highway to Hell" video was filmed 10 days before Scott died.
Disc 2 opens with the excellent "Hells bells", and the arrival of Brian Johnson, a total opposite to Scott but a great singer and frontman none the less. It's no surprise that DC were entering thier most successful phase as a band with the multi million selling "back in Black", and 5 videos coming from this album, with " You shook me all night long" easily the best. The more recent videos are more professional, and obviously designed for that market, but show AC/DC as a growing band, who never lost thier roots or indeed thier sense of humour. You should go out and buy this DVD, but who am I kidding, you probably have already.

IRON MAIDEN - The Early Years (2004)
If you've been a Maiden fan as long as I have, this DVD package will be welcomed into your house like Steve Harris going into the Ruskin Arms pub. Maiden have took some early concert footage (originally available on video) and gave it a good polish. So what you get here is shows from three different tours - Killers, The Beast On The Road, and Piece Of Mind. The Beast Tour footage brought back the most memories for me as it was my first ever gig back in 1982 (was it really that long ago?).
The real treats however lie in the second disc, a 90 minute documentary charting the history of the Irons, with interviews from all the guys, even past members who may have only been in the band for a few months! Good to see Paul Di'anno chatting upbeat about his time in the band, I remember a lot of animosity when he left, all`s well that ends well I suppose!
Also on the disc is early concert footage from said Ruskin Arms, filmed with maybe two cameras but great to see how tight a band Maiden were even back then. All the videos from the first 5 singles are here as well as the 1st appearance on Top of the Pops. All in all a great package, although I think part two might just be that bit better...we'll wait and see.

LED ZEPPELIN - DVD (2003)
This is the ultimate Led Zeppelin DVD experience. The double DVD is packed with nearly 6 hours of live material, all of which has been lovingly produced by Jimmy Page.
Disc 1 contains footage from The Royal Albert Hall in 1970, while disc 2 features Madison Square Gardens in 1973, Earls Court 1975, and the classic Knebworth headline performance from 1979. Both discs have bonus material which includes an early performance on the Danmarks Radio Supershow. Sound and visual quality is superb.
Highly recommended and a must for all Zeppelin fans.

RUSH - Live In Rio (2003)
Live In Rio shows Rush performing in front of 60,000 over excited fans at the Sao Paulo football stadium. The Brazilian audience are fantastic and bounce and sing their way through every song. Geddy, Alex, and Neil play tracks from every stage of their career including the recent Vapor Trails album. There is also a bonus disc that features a fly on the wall documentary of the band as they prepare for the show.

THIN LIZZY - The Boys Are Back In Town (2004)
Being a Lizzy fan I was really looking forward to seeing this DVD, but it proved to be a real let down! The DVD shows Lizzy playing an open air gig at the stunning setting of Sydney harbour. The stage is set up right next to the Opera House and there is a sell out audience in attendance. The band consisting of Phil Lynott, Gary Moore, Scott Gorham, and Mark Nauseef (filling in for Brian Downey) play an absolute blinder. So what's the problem? Quite simply the visual and audio quality on this DVD is atrocious. It really isn't worth spending your hard earned cash on.
SR rating of 3 out of 10, though a better quality version of this performance would probably get a 9.
