Rock band Nazareth (originally called The Shadettes) formed in Dunfermline in 1968. The self titled debut album was released in 1971. The band's 3rd album Razamanaz (1973) was a major seller and spawned two UK top ten singles Broken Down Angel, and Bad Bad Boy. Nazareth released the mutli million selling Hair Of The Dog in 1975 which remains their most popular album to date. In 1976 Love Hurts reached number 8 in the USA singles chart (Billboard hot 100). The band remained very popular throughout the 1970s and are still active today. Drummer Darrell Sweet died in 1999.

Blues-based rock band formed in Glasgow in 1969 were discovered by Led Zeppelin`s manager Peter Grant. Stone The Crows are famed for their powerhouse vocalists Jim Dewar and Maggie Bell. Maggie was voted Best Female Vocalist by Melody Maker in 1971. The band released 4 albums before they split up in 1973. Les Harvey, brother of Alex, was electrocuted and died on stage in 1972. Jim Dewar went on to be vocalist and play bass for Robin Trower. Maggie Bell followed a solo career and had a top twenty UK single with BA Robertson in 1981 titled "Hold Me". Guitarist Jimmy McCulloch later joined Wings.

Funk and R&B band formed in Dundee in 1971. In 1974 their album AWB reached number one in the US Hot 100 chart. In 1975, the single "Pick Up The Pieces" from the album AWB also reached number one in the USA. The band have released many albums and remain active today.

Glam rockers The Sensational Alex Harvey Band (SAHB) formed in Scotland in 1972 when vocalist Alex Harvey teamed up with Glasgow progressive rock band Tear Gas. The first album Framed was released in 1972. SAHB released 9 albums, and had hit singles in the UK with Delilah in 1975, and Boston Tea Party in 1976. Alex died on February 4, 1982. Guitarist Zal Cleminson went on to join Nazareth, and drummer Ted McKenna joined The Rory Gallagher Band then MSG. SAHB reformed with the original line up and still carry on today minus their enigmatic frontman.

Celtic rock band Runrig (originally called The Run Rig Dance Band) formed on the Western Isles of Scotland in 1973. Runrig play traditional Scottish folk music mixed with an anthemic rock sound, many of their songs are sang in Gaelic. The band remained part time until 1978 when the first album Play Gaelic was released. Runrig have released 12 studio albums so far, with 1991`s Big Wheel reaching number 4 in the UK album charts, and single Hearthammer becoming the band’s first Top 40 hit single. 1993`s Amazing Things achieved Runrig’s highest ever chart position, reaching number 2. In 1997An Ubhal as Airde became the first and only Scottish Gaelic language song to get into the UK Top 20, reaching number 18. Vocalist Donnie Munro left after 23 years with the band and was replaced by Canadian Bruce Guthro in 1997.

PILOT

Pilot was a pop rock band formed in Edinburgh in 1973. They had several hit singles, the most popular being "Magic" which reached number 11 in the UK and number 3 in the USA in 1974. The single "January" reached number 1 in the UK in 1975. The band released 4 albums before calling it a day in 1977. Three members of the band went on to join The Alan Parsons Project, and were sought after session musicians working with acts such as Kate Bush and Paul McCartney.

Punk rock band The Skids were formed in 1977 in Dunfermline. They released five albums and ten singles. The Skids most successful year was 1979 when they spent most of the year in the singles charts with hits Charade, Masquerade, Working For The Yankee Dollar, and the top 10 hit Into The Valley. The Skids were the biggest Scottish punk band of the 76-79 era. They dissolved in 1982 with Stuart Adamson having already left to form Big Country.

Formed in Glasgow in 1978 and originally called Johnny And The Self Abusers. Simple Minds began as a New Wave band and through time gradually transformed into a stadium filling alternative rock band. Their first album Life In A Day was released in 1979, yet their big commercial breakthrough came in 1982 with the release of their fifth album New Gold Dream (81, 82, 83, 84). The band have had many hit albums and singles since then including a number one single in the USA (Billboard Hot 100) Don`t You (Forget About Me).

Wild Horses was formed by Scots rock heavy weights Brian Robertson (ex Thin Lizzy) and Jimmy Bain (ex Rainbow) in 1978. Their debut album "Wild Horses" cracked the UK top 40 in 1980. A second album "Stand Your Ground" was released before the band dissolved in 1981. Brian Robertson went on to join Motorhead, while Jimmy Bain joined Dio.

Rock band Big Country were formed in Dunfermline, Scotland, in 1981 by ex Skids' guitarist / vocalist Stuart Adamson. Their first album The Crossing was released in 1983 and sold over 3 million copies. Big Country had 17 top 30 singles and seven top 30 albums in the UK before Stuart`s death on December 16th 2001.

Del Amitri are a pop-rock guitar band formed in Glasgow in 1982. The band were signed by Chrysalis Records in 1985 and released their self titled debut album in the same year. Del Amitri had several top ten albums in the UK, yet surprisingly no top ten singles. However Roll to Me reached the top ten in the Billboard singles chart in the USA in 1995. Frontman Justin Currie and Guitarist Ian Harvie are the only members of Del Amitri to have been present throughout the band's long history.

Primal Scream have had 5 top 10 albums in the UK so far, with Screamadelica reaching number 1 in 1991, and 13 top 40 singles.

Folk rock band formed in Auchtermuchty in 1983 by twin brothers Charlie and Craig Reid. They have had several top ten singles in the UK. Stiltskin formed in West Lothian in 1989. In 1994 they had a number one hit single in the UK with "Inside". The band split in 1996 and frontman Ray Wilson went on to join Genesis for the album Calling All Stations. The band have now reformed under the title "Ray Wilson and Stiltskin".
