Born from the ashes of Tabithas Secret, singer Rob Thomas, bassist Brian Yale and drummer Paul Doucette embarked on forming a new band. After recruiting guitarists Adam Gaynor and the incredible Kyle Cook they agreed on the name Matchbox Twenty and set about recording their debut album, an album that would go on to change their lives dramatically.
"Yourself or someone like you" was at first a slow seller. Their debut single" Real World" didn't exactly set the charts alight, but the band were persuaded to release "Push" as a follow up and the overnight success began. The single was a Billboard top 5 hit and the album quickly began to sell. None of the guys could dream their debut would go on to sell over 25 million worldwide, going platinum x12 in the US alone. It also went on to spawn 6 hit singles, notably "3am" (actually wrote in the Tabithas secret days).
The band toured relentlessly over the next two years, gathering massive acclaim in Australia and the US. Then after some much needed R&R, work on the much anticipated follow up was to begin (worth noting that Rob Thomas was also asked to write and sing on Carlos Santana's comeback album, the resulting "smooth" went to No.1 in the US and stayed their for several weeks, making it one of the biggest selling singles of that year).
How to follow their debut album? With the quadruple selling "Mad Season" is how. First single "Bent" was a No.1 Billboard Hot 100 smash and the bandwagon was rolling again. But success in the UK was nowhere near like anything back in their homeland, from huge arenas in the US to small 200 capacity venues in the UK, but this just showed how hard the band were willing to work both home and abroad to spread their music to a worldwide audience.
After all this success, could the band pull off the hat trick? Their third album "More than you think you are" followed in the same vein as its predecessors - great music with excellent melodies and thoughtful lyrics. Hit singles again followed with "Disease" and top 5 smash "unwell" and another world tour also began. The difference this time though was that here in the UK they were finally in the big league, playing arenas and selling out London's Wembly Arena.
The band are currently taking a well deserved break at the moment, doing some solo stuff and hopefully a wee tour here or there. The much anticipated solo album from Rob Thomas is due out early next year and much is expected from a songwriter who has already won honours for his abilities including 3 Grammy's, 11 BMI awards and Billboard Songwriter of the Year for two years running.
Since making their debut several years ago, Matchbox Twenty have become one of the most admired and consistently successful rock bands in recent history, clearly establishing themselves as an exceptional unit, both in the studio and live on stage. If you haven't heard these guys do yourself a favour and check them out... they really are worth it.
